The survivors of Hunayn fled to the fortified town of Ta'if and bolted its gates. The Prophet ﷺ followed and besieged the town, using catapults and tried to breach the walls, but they were strong and the defenders well supplied.فرّ ناجو حُنين إلى مدينة الطائف الحصينة وأغلقوا أبوابها. فتبعهم النبيُّ ﷺ وحاصر المدينة، واستعمل المنجنيق وحاول اقتحام الأسوار، لكنها كانت منيعةً والمدافعون موفورِي الزاد.

Rather than waste lives in a long siege, the Prophet ﷺ chose to withdraw. When asked to invoke against Thaqif, he instead raised his hands and prayed: "O Allah, guide Thaqif and bring them to us." It was a prayer of mercy, not of vengeance.وآثر النبيُّ ﷺ ألا يُهدر الأرواح في حصارٍ طويل، فاختار الرجوع. ولمّا طُلب منه أن يدعوَ على ثقيف رفع يديه ودعا: «اللهمّ اهدِ ثقيفَ وائتِ بهم». فكان دعاءَ رحمةٍ لا انتقام.

His patience bore fruit. Within about a year, the people of Thaqif came to Madinah of their own accord, accepted Islam, and the town that had resisted him became one of the strongholds of the faith. Gentleness had achieved what siege engines could not.فأثمر صبرُه، فما هي إلا نحو عام حتى وفدت ثقيفُ إلى المدينة طائعةً فأسلمت، وصارت المدينةُ التي قاومته من معاقل الإسلام. فبلغ الرفقُ ما لم تبلغه آلاتُ الحصار.
