After Makkah fell, the great tribes of Hawazin and Thaqif gathered to fight the Muslims. This time the believers were many, about twelve thousand, and some of them said: "We will not be defeated today for want of numbers." It was a thought that displeased Allah.بعد فتح مكة احتشدت قبيلتا هوازن وثقيف الكبيرتان لقتال المسلمين. وكان المؤمنون هذه المرّة كثرةً، نحو اثني عشر ألفاً، حتى قال بعضهم: «لن نُغلَب اليوم من قلّة». وكانت كلمةً لم يرضَها الله.

The army entered the narrow valley of Hunayn in the darkness before dawn. The archers of Hawazin were waiting in the heights and loosed a sudden storm of arrows. The Muslims were thrown into panic and most of them fled, until only a small band stood firm.دخل الجيشُ وادي حُنين الضيّق في عَتمة ما قبل الفجر، ورُماةُ هوازن كامنون في الأعالي، فأمطروهم وابلاً مفاجئاً من النبل، فاضطرب المسلمون وفرّ أكثرهم، حتى لم يثبُت إلا نفرٌ قليل.

Yet the Prophet ﷺ did not move. He pressed his mule forward toward the enemy, calling out: "I am the Prophet, this is no lie; I am the son of Abd al-Muttalib." His uncle al-Abbas, who had a powerful voice, called the companions back, and they came rushing from every side.لكنّ النبيَّ ﷺ لم يتزحزح، بل دفع بغلتَه نحو العدوّ يُنادي: «أنا النبيُّ لا كذِب، أنا ابنُ عبد المطّلب». ونادى عمُّه العباسُ الجهيرُ الصوت الصحابةَ، فأقبلوا يتسارعون من كل ناحية.

The believers regrouped around their Prophet ﷺ and charged, and Allah sent down tranquillity upon them and unseen forces, and the enemy was routed. The lesson was written in the Quran for all time: numbers avail nothing without the help of Allah.فالتأم المؤمنون حول نبيّهم ﷺ وحملوا، وأنزل الله عليهم السكينة وجنوداً لم يروها، فانهزم العدوّ. وكُتب الدرسُ في القرآن خالداً: لا تُغني الكثرةُ شيئاً بغير نصر الله.
