The Quraysh of Makkah had seized the wealth and homes of the Muslims who emigrated to Madinah. When news came that a large Makkan trade caravan led by Abu Sufyan was returning from Syria, the Prophet ﷺ set out with about 313 companions, lightly armed, with only a few horses and camels between them.كانت قريشٌ قد استولت على أموال المهاجرين وديارهم بمكة. فلمّا بلغ النبيَّ ﷺ خبرُ قافلةٍ تجاريّةٍ كبيرة لقريش يقودها أبو سفيان عائدةً من الشام، خرج في نحو ثلاثمئة وثلاثة عشر من أصحابه، خفافَ السلاح، ليس بينهم إلا أفراسٌ قليلة وبعضُ الإبل.
The caravan slipped away, but the Quraysh marched out from Makkah a thousand strong, proud and well equipped, insisting on war. The two armies met at the wells of Badr. The Prophet ﷺ spent the night in prayer, beseeching his Lord: "O Allah, if this band perishes today, You will not be worshipped on earth."أفلتت القافلة، لكنّ قريشاً خرجت من مكة في ألفٍ مدجَّجين بالسلاح والخيلاء، وأصرّوا على القتال. فالتقى الجمعان عند آبار بدر. وبات النبيُّ ﷺ ليلتَه يصلّي ويبتهل إلى ربّه: «اللهمّ إن تَهلِكْ هذه العصابةُ اليومَ لا تُعبَدْ في الأرض».
When battle was joined, Allah sent down angels to support the believers. The leaders of the Quraysh fell one after another, among them Abu Jahl, the fiercest enemy of Islam. Around seventy of the enemy were killed and seventy taken captive, while the Muslims lost fourteen martyrs.فلمّا التحم القتال أنزل الله الملائكة مدداً للمؤمنين، وتساقط صناديد قريش واحداً بعد واحد، وفيهم أبو جهلٍ ألدّ أعداء الإسلام. قُتل من العدوّ نحو سبعين وأُسر سبعون، واستُشهد من المسلمين أربعة عشر رجلاً.
Badr was the turning point. Allah called it the Day of the Criterion (Yawm al-Furqan), the day that separated truth from falsehood. The captives were treated with mercy; many were freed for a ransom, and some literate prisoners earned their freedom by teaching ten Muslim children to read and write.كانت بدرٌ نقطةَ التحوّل، وسمّاها الله «يوم الفرقان»، اليوم الذي فرّق بين الحق والباطل. وعُومل الأسرى بالرحمة، فأُطلق كثيرٌ منهم بالفداء، وافتدى بعضُ من يُحسن الكتابة نفسَه بأن يُعلّم عشرةً من صبيان المسلمين القراءة والكتابة.
