Prophets of Allahأنبياء الله

Allah created Adam from clay and breathed into him a soul, then taught him the names of all things and commanded the angels to prostrate to him. Iblis refused out of pride and was cast out. Adam and his wife Hawwa lived in Paradise but ate from the forbidden tree; they repented sincerely and Allah forgave them, sending them to the earth to begin humanity.خلق الله آدم من طين ونفخ فيه من روحه، وعلّمه أسماء كلّ شيء، وأمر الملائكة بالسجود له فسجدوا إلا إبليس استكبر فأُخرج من رحمة الله. وأسكن الله آدم وزوجه حوّاء الجنّة، فأكلا من الشجرة المحرّمة، ثمّ تابا توبةً نصوحاً فتاب الله عليهما، وأهبطهما إلى الأرض لتبدأ البشريّة.

﴿ فَتَلَقَّى آدَمُ مِن رَّبِّهِ كَلِمَاتٍ فَتَابَ عَلَيْهِ ۚ إِنَّهُ هُوَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ ﴾

The Quran praises Idris as a man of truth and a prophet whom Allah raised to a high station. He is remembered for his patience and steadfast worship.أثنى القرآن على إدريس بأنّه صدّيقٌ نبيّ، ورفعه الله مكاناً عليّاً، ويُذكر بصبره وكثرة عبادته وثباته على الحقّ.

﴿ وَاذْكُرْ فِي الْكِتَابِ إِدْرِيسَ ۚ إِنَّهُ كَانَ صِدِّيقًا نَّبِيًّا ﴾

Nuh called his people to worship Allah alone for nearly a thousand years, but only a few believed. Allah commanded him to build an ark; when the flood came, the believers and pairs of every creature were saved, while the disbelievers, including his own son, drowned.دعا نوحٌ قومه إلى عبادة الله وحده قرابة ألف عام، فما آمن معه إلا قليل، فأمره الله ببناء الفُلك. فلمّا جاء الطوفان نجا المؤمنون وأزواجٌ من كلّ نوعٍ من الكائنات، وغرق الكافرون ومنهم ابنه.

﴿ وَأُوحِيَ إِلَىٰ نُوحٍ أَنَّهُ لَن يُؤْمِنَ مِن قَوْمِكَ إِلَّا مَن قَدْ آمَنَ ﴾

Hud was sent to the powerful people of Ad, who built great monuments yet worshipped idols and grew arrogant. When they persisted in denial, Allah destroyed them with a furious, roaring wind, and saved Hud and the believers.أُرسل هودٌ إلى قوم عادٍ الأقوياء الذين بنوا الصروح العظيمة وعبدوا الأصنام وتكبّروا في الأرض. فلمّا أصرّوا على التكذيب أهلكهم الله بريحٍ صرصرٍ عاتية، ونجّى هوداً ومن آمن معه.

﴿ وَإِلَىٰ عَادٍ أَخَاهُمْ هُودًا ۚ قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنْ إِلَٰهٍ غَيْرُهُ ﴾

Salih was sent to Thamud, who carved their homes into the mountains. As a sign, Allah brought forth a she-camel from the rock and ordered them not to harm it. They killed it in defiance, so a mighty blast destroyed them.أُرسل صالحٌ إلى ثمود الذين نحتوا بيوتهم في الجبال، وآتاهم الله آيةً: ناقةً أخرجها من الصخر وأمرهم ألّا يمسّوها بسوء، فعقروها متحدّين، فأخذتهم الصيحة فأهلكتهم.

﴿ فَعَقَرُوا النَّاقَةَ وَعَتَوْا عَنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّهِمْ ﴾

Ibrahim shattered his people idols to show their helplessness, and was thrown into a blazing fire which Allah made cool and safe. He built the Kaaba in Mecca with his son Ismail, and was tested with the command to sacrifice his son, which he and his son willingly accepted before Allah ransomed the boy. He is honoured as the friend of Allah.حطّم إبراهيم أصنام قومه ليُظهر عجزها، فألقوه في نارٍ عظيمة فجعلها الله برداً وسلاماً عليه. وبنى الكعبة في مكّة مع ابنه إسماعيل، وابتُلي بالأمر بذبح ابنه فاستسلم هو وابنه لأمر الله، ففداه الله بذبحٍ عظيم، وقد اتّخذه الله خليلاً.

﴿ وَاتَّخَذَ اللَّهُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ خَلِيلًا ﴾

Lut, the nephew of Ibrahim, was sent to a people who committed open immorality never seen before. They rejected him, so Allah destroyed their towns, saving Lut and the believers, except his wife who sided with the wrongdoers.لوطٌ ابن أخي إبراهيم، أُرسل إلى قومٍ أتوا الفاحشة التي لم يسبقهم بها أحد، فكذّبوه، فأهلك الله قُراهم، ونجّى لوطاً والمؤمنين إلا امرأته كانت من الغابرين.

﴿ أَتَأْتُونَ الْفَاحِشَةَ مَا سَبَقَكُم بِهَا مِنْ أَحَدٍ مِّنَ الْعَالَمِينَ ﴾

Ismail was the firstborn son of Ibrahim and the forefather of the Arabs. As a young boy he was left with his mother Hajar in the barren valley of Mecca, where the well of Zamzam sprang for them. He helped his father raise the foundations of the Kaaba and was patient and true to his promise.إسماعيل بِكر إبراهيم وجدّ العرب، تركه أبوه مع أمّه هاجر في وادي مكّة القاحل فأنبع الله لهما ماء زمزم. وشارك أباه في رفع قواعد الكعبة، وكان صادق الوعد صبوراً.

﴿ وَإِذْ يَرْفَعُ إِبْرَاهِيمُ الْقَوَاعِدَ مِنَ الْبَيْتِ وَإِسْمَاعِيلُ ﴾

Ishaq was given to Ibrahim and his wife Sarah in their old age as glad tidings from Allah. He was a prophet and the father of Yaqub, and from his line came many prophets of the Children of Israel.إسحاق وُهب لإبراهيم وزوجه سارة على الكِبَر بُشرى من الله، كان نبيّاً وهو أبو يعقوب، ومن ذرّيّته جاء كثيرٌ من أنبياء بني إسرائيل.

﴿ فَبَشَّرْنَاهَا بِإِسْحَاقَ وَمِن وَرَاءِ إِسْحَاقَ يَعْقُوبَ ﴾

Yaqub, also called Israel, was the son of Ishaq and father of twelve sons, among them Yusuf. He grieved deeply when he lost Yusuf, losing his eyesight from sorrow, yet held firm with beautiful patience until they were reunited.يعقوب ويُسمّى إسرائيل، ابن إسحاق وأبو اثني عشر ولداً منهم يوسف. حزن حزناً شديداً حين فقد يوسف حتى ابيضّت عيناه من الحزن، لكنّه صبر صبراً جميلاً حتى جمعه الله بهم.

﴿ فَصَبْرٌ جَمِيلٌ ۖ وَاللَّهُ الْمُسْتَعَانُ عَلَىٰ مَا تَصِفُونَ ﴾

Yusuf was thrown into a well by his jealous brothers, sold as a slave, and taken to Egypt. He was imprisoned unjustly, yet his honesty and his gift for interpreting dreams raised him to become the minister in charge of Egypt treasures. He forgave his brothers and reunited with his father, a story of patience and trust in Allah.ألقى إخوة يوسف الحاسدون به في البئر، فبِيع رقيقاً وحُمل إلى مصر، ثمّ سُجن ظلماً، لكنّ صدقه وعلمه بتأويل الرؤى رفعاه حتى صار على خزائن مصر. وعفا عن إخوته وجُمع بأبيه، في قصّةٍ عظيمةٍ في الصبر والتوكّل على الله.

﴿ قَالَ لَا تَثْرِيبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْيَوْمَ ۖ يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ ﴾

Ayyub was a wealthy, righteous man whom Allah tested with the loss of his wealth, children, and health over many years. He never despaired nor complained, only turning to Allah. In the end Allah healed him and restored to him more than he had lost, an example of patience for all time.أيّوب رجلٌ صالحٌ موسرٌ ابتلاه الله بفقد ماله وولده وصحّته سنين طويلة، فما يئس ولا شكا إلا إلى الله. فلمّا صبر كشف الله ضرّه وردّ إليه أهله ومثلهم معهم، فكان مضرب المثل في الصبر.

﴿ إِنَّا وَجَدْنَاهُ صَابِرًا ۚ نِّعْمَ الْعَبْدُ ۖ إِنَّهُ أَوَّابٌ ﴾

Shuayb was sent to the people of Madyan, who cheated in weights and measures. He called them to worship Allah and to deal justly. When they refused and threatened him, a punishment seized them, and the believers were saved.أُرسل شعيبٌ إلى أهل مَدْين الذين يُطفّفون الكيل والميزان، فدعاهم إلى عبادة الله والعدل في المعاملة. فلمّا أبَوا وتوعّدوه أخذهم العذاب، ونجّى الله المؤمنين.

﴿ وَيَا قَوْمِ أَوْفُوا الْمِكْيَالَ وَالْمِيزَانَ بِالْقِسْطِ ﴾

Musa was raised in the very palace of Pharaoh, then chosen by Allah and given clear signs, including the staff that became a serpent. He confronted Pharaoh tyranny, led the Children of Israel out of Egypt, and Allah parted the sea for them while Pharaoh drowned. He received the Torah and spoke directly with Allah.نشأ موسى في قصر فرعون، ثمّ اصطفاه الله وآتاه آياتٍ بيّنات منها العصا التي صارت ثعباناً. واجه طغيان فرعون، وأخرج بني إسرائيل من مصر، ففلق الله لهم البحر ونجّاهم وأغرق فرعون، وآتاه الله التوراة وكلّمه تكليماً.

﴿ وَكَلَّمَ اللَّهُ مُوسَىٰ تَكْلِيمًا ﴾

Harun was the elder brother of Musa, eloquent in speech. At Musa request Allah made him a prophet and supporter to help carry the message to Pharaoh and to guide the Children of Israel.هارون أخو موسى الأكبر، كان فصيح اللسان. فسأل موسى ربّه أن يجعله معه وزيراً، فجعله الله نبيّاً ومعيناً في تبليغ الرسالة إلى فرعون وهداية بني إسرائيل.

﴿ وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُ مِن رَّحْمَتِنَا أَخَاهُ هَارُونَ نَبِيًّا ﴾

The Quran mentions Dhul-Kifl among the patient and the righteous, praising his steadfastness. He honoured his commitments and was counted among the best of people.ذكر القرآن ذا الكفل في عداد الصابرين والأخيار، وأثنى على ثباته ووفائه بعهده، وعدّه من خيار الناس.

﴿ وَإِسْمَاعِيلَ وَإِدْرِيسَ وَذَا الْكِفْلِ ۖ كُلٌّ مِّنَ الصَّابِرِينَ ﴾

Dawud defeated the giant Jalut (Goliath) as a young man. Allah made him a prophet and a just king, gave him the Zabur (Psalms), softened iron in his hands, and the mountains and birds glorified Allah along with him.هزم داود الجبّار جالوت وهو فتى، وجعله الله نبيّاً وملكاً عادلاً، وآتاه الزبور، وألان له الحديد، وسخّر معه الجبال والطير يُسبّحن.

﴿ وَآتَيْنَا دَاوُودَ زَبُورًا ﴾

Sulayman, the son of Dawud, was given a kingdom unlike any other: he understood the speech of birds and ants, commanded the wind and the jinn, and ruled with wisdom and justice. He invited the Queen of Sheba to the worship of Allah alone.سليمان ابن داود، آتاه الله مُلكاً لا ينبغي لأحدٍ من بعده: فهم منطق الطير والنمل، وسخّر له الريح والجنّ، وحكم بالحكمة والعدل، ودعا ملكة سبأ إلى عبادة الله وحده.

﴿ وَوَرِثَ سُلَيْمَانُ دَاوُودَ ۖ وَقَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ عُلِّمْنَا مَنطِقَ الطَّيْرِ ﴾

Ilyas was sent to call his people away from worshipping the idol Baal and back to Allah, the Creator and the Lord of their forefathers. He is counted among the righteous messengers.أُرسل إلياس يدعو قومه إلى ترك عبادة الصنم (بعل) والعودة إلى الله ربّ العالمين وربّ آبائهم الأوّلين، وهو من المرسلين الصالحين.

﴿ أَتَدْعُونَ بَعْلًا وَتَذَرُونَ أَحْسَنَ الْخَالِقِينَ ﴾

Al-Yasa (Elisha) is named in the Quran among the chosen and the best of people. He continued the call to worship Allah alone after the prophets before him.اليسع ذكره الله في القرآن من المصطفَين الأخيار، وواصل الدعوة إلى عبادة الله وحده بعد من سبقه من الأنبياء.

﴿ وَإِسْمَاعِيلَ وَالْيَسَعَ وَيُونُسَ وَلُوطًا ۚ وَكُلًّا فَضَّلْنَا عَلَى الْعَالَمِينَ ﴾

Yunus left his people in anger before Allah permitted, and was swallowed by a great whale. In the darkness he called upon Allah, admitting his fault, and Allah saved him. His people, nearly a hundred thousand, all believed and were spared.غادر يونس قومه مغاضباً قبل أن يأذن الله، فالتقمه الحوت. فنادى ربّه في الظلمات معترفاً بخطئه، فنجّاه الله. وآمن قومه جميعاً وكانوا قرابة مئة ألف، فرفع الله عنهم العذاب.

﴿ فَنَادَىٰ فِي الظُّلُمَاتِ أَن لَّا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ ﴾

Zakariyya was a devout prophet who cared for Maryam. Though he was very old and his wife unable to bear children, he prayed to Allah for an heir, and Allah granted him a righteous son, Yahya.زكريا نبيٌّ عابدٌ كفل مريم، وقد بلغ من الكِبَر عتيّاً وكانت امرأته عاقراً، فدعا الله أن يهب له وليّاً، فاستجاب له ورزقه ولداً صالحاً هو يحيى.

﴿ رَبِّ هَبْ لِي مِن لَّدُنكَ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً ۖ إِنَّكَ سَمِيعُ الدُّعَاءِ ﴾

Yahya (John), the son of Zakariyya, was given wisdom while still a child. He was pure, devout, and dutiful to his parents, never arrogant nor disobedient, a prophet who confirmed the word of Allah.يحيى ابن زكريا، آتاه الله الحُكم صبيّاً. كان تقيّاً برّاً بوالديه، لم يكن جبّاراً عصيّاً، نبيّاً مُصدّقاً بكلمةٍ من الله.

﴿ يَا يَحْيَىٰ خُذِ الْكِتَابَ بِقُوَّةٍ ۖ وَآتَيْنَاهُ الْحُكْمَ صَبِيًّا ﴾

Isa (Jesus) was born miraculously to the virgin Maryam by the command of Allah, and spoke in the cradle defending his mother. By Allah permission he healed the blind and the leper and revived the dead, and was given the Injil (Gospel). He is a mighty prophet, not God nor the son of God; he was not killed nor crucified, but Allah raised him to Himself, and he will return before the end of time.وُلد عيسى معجزةً من مريم العذراء بأمر الله، وتكلّم في المهد دفاعاً عن أمّه. وأبرأ بإذن الله الأكمه والأبرص وأحيا الموتى، وأُنزل عليه الإنجيل. وهو نبيٌّ عظيم، ليس إلهاً ولا ابناً لله؛ ما قُتل وما صُلب، بل رفعه الله إليه، وسينزل قبل آخر الزمان.

﴿ إِنِّي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ آتَانِيَ الْكِتَابَ وَجَعَلَنِي نَبِيًّا ﴾

Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the final prophet, sent as a mercy to all the worlds. Allah revealed to him the Quran, the last and preserved scripture, completing the message of all the prophets before him. ﴿ مَّا كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ أَبَا أَحَدٍ مِّن رِّجَالِكُمْ وَلَٰكِن رَّسُولَ اللَّهِ وَخَاتَمَ النَّبِيِّينَ ﴾
